Professor Robin Wright and the Working Group on Plants and Religion host a Conference on “Multidisciplinary Approaches to Plants and Religion”
In the estimation of all participants, the Conference on “Multidisciplinary Approaches to Plants and Religion”, held on December 15-17, 2012, was a major success. The Working Group on Plants and religion (WGPR), consisting of graduate students from Religion, Latin American Studies, and a potential candidate to the Ph.D. program, with faculty advisor Robin M. Wright, began discussing the idea for the Conference in Spring semester 2011. After numerous weekly planning sessions, and a great deal of footwork, the Conference organizers succeeded in gaining the sponsorship of the Religion Department, the Dean’s Office, the Center for Latin American Studies, the Anthropology Department, the Center for International Studies and the Public sphere, as well as private donors who, together with the goodwill and strong support from all participants, turned the event into a memorable and important event. Specialists from various departments at UF, as well as scholars from other American universities, and two internationally known scholars from Brazil provided a rich and varied range of knowledge and experience on the place of plants in diverse religions around the globe.
