- Department of Religion Spring 2011 Events
The Department of Religion co-sponsored a lecture by Michael Sandel, the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Professor of Government at Harvard, on Tuesday, March 22. Professor Sandel's talk, "Doing the Right Thing in Public and Private Life," was hosted by the Bob Graham Center for Public Service at UF.
On Monday, April 4, at 7:30 pm, Euan Cameron, the Henry Luce III Professor of Reformation History at Union Seminary, gave a public lecture in Library West, Room 212 (just to the right of the circulation desk). Cameron’s talk was entitled “Cosmic Time and the Dialogue Between Faith and History.” Cameron is arguably North America’s foremost authority on religion in the late medieval and early modern world. His most recent book is Enchanted Europe: Superstition, Reason and Religion 1250-1750 (Oxford, 2010). His talk was sponsored by the UF Honors Program, the Departments of Religion and History, and the Center for the Humanities in the Public Sphere.
Professor Makarand Paranjape, National University of Singapore, gave a talk on "The Relevance of Gandhi to Environmental Studies" on Monday, April 11, 2011, 6.30 pm, Room 134 Anderson Hall, UF. Professor Paranjape also led a class discussion on Hindu Traditions in Singapore (April 11, 2.30 pm, Room 117, Anderson Hall) and spoke in Professor Whitney Sanford’s class on Religion and Food, Tuesday, April 12th. Professor Paranjape’s visit was sponsored by The Center for the Study of Hindu Traditions (CHiTra).
Professor Sherman Jackson, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies, Professor of African-American Studies, Visiting Professor of Law at the University of Michigan, and author of several books including Islam and the Blackamerican, The Boundaries of Theological Tolerance in Islam, and Islamic Law and the State, gave a talk on "Islam and Race: An American Perspective" on Feb. 8th at the University Auditorium. Several members of the community, students, faculty, and administrators, including President Bernie Machen, Provost Joe Glover, and Associate Dean of Humanities, David Pharies, were able to attend the talk and the reception. The event was sponsored by Islam On Campus, Office of the Provost, the Department of Religion, UF Black History Month, and Student Government.
